National Gospel Song Contests Fact Sheet

The primary objective of the competition is to promote creativity in gospel music. It focuses on the song writing talents of local song writers and as such is more of a composer's than a singer's contest.

The annual event began as part of the pre-independence celebration activities. In 1990 however, the contest was moved to the Easter season as it was felt that the nature of the event was more suited to that time of the year when the Christian Community celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Competition And Its Objective
The Original Gospel Competition is arranged to promote the creativity in gospel music in Jamaica with more focus being placed on composition and singing. The competition is aimed to motivating the Christian community to write and present meaningful lyrics that would provoke and challenge Jamaicans to spiritual development.

Target Group
Individuals from across the island are given the opportunity to expose their talents with the JCDC's guidance. Recognizing that this is an amateur competition, it is designed to encourage a high level of participation and interest within communities.
