There is no doubt that we all recognize the importance of cultural activities, and how they relate to our personal development and growth. Cultural diversity is part of Jamaica's wealth. In fact, I am sure that we can all attest tothe truth that all our lives have been moulded by cultural practices in one way or another.
In light of this , I salute the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission which has emerged as one of our most important cultural agencies. It is even more important that as a nation, we do what is necessary in helping to sustain our cultural events. These events provide our youths with employment and other opportunities to advance themselves in the Arts. The cultural sector involves highly dynamic, creative and service activities with much job creation potential.
Culture is also a major component of a region's development. The preservation, renovation and exploitation of cultural heritage are an integral part of local and regional development. They are also important tools in encouraging urban renewal. Making cultural assets better and more widely known, and promoting cultural activities are cruical to the development of tourism andleisure activities whose economic benefits to our country cannot be underestimated.
We must therefore not lose sight of the fact that culture concerns not only employment and growth issuse, but that it also has a fundamental role in promoting social cohesion and combating social exclusion, especially of disadvantaged groups.
perhaps the most important aspects of cultural activities is that they bridge the gap between past and present generations, and those of the future. in this way, although we embrace the changes of the fast-paced world and its constant improvements, we do not forget our traditions.
