DAVID
SLEW
Song: Jamaican Woman |

Voting Details |
Born
on October 29, 1984, birth name David
Samuels has been residing in the community
of Swallowfield since. The youngest
member of a family of four , growing
up, music was his release for pain,
sorrow or whatever difficulties I
faced. He was drawn to artists such
as Garnet Silk, Buju Banton and Luciano
in the early stages. Beenie man and
Bounty Killer were later influences.
David Slew started
performing as an opening act at stage
shows in his community going by the
name of Dave Killer. His first real
and most memorable performance came
in grade five of Mico Practicing All
Age School in a production called
"Open for Business" for
which our then prime minister was
present.
Slew’s musical
influences after a while, shifted
to more cultural and religious genres
and he became very interested in the
lyrical content of Sizzla. His first
professional recording was of a song
entitled "Ghetto Youths Upliftment"
produced by Franz Davis. David Slew
worked with Davis for a while and
was then introduced to Mario Lawrence
C.E.O. of Music Factory. Since working
with Music Factory, David has completed
a number of tracks including, "Kingston
*hity Life" and "Friday
Night" along with Omar Reid.
David Slew’s
aim is to be an ambassador for Jamaica
and to use his music as a medium to
regenerate a positive vibe in the
society. He also hopes to uplift people
and influence other artists to do
the same.

AKEWA
Song: Be My Lover |

Voting Details |
Akewa feels he has
a story to tell. Those who have heard
him think he has the perfect medium
with which to deliver his message
- an exciting tenor. Born Rohan Brown
on November 3, 1979, Akewa (his actually
middle name from an African song of
the same title) became known by the
neighbours in his tender years as
the 'Morning Alarm' due to his regular
vocal soundings in the early hours
of the day.
Today Akewa is a
little quieter and but no less ardent
in his vocal zeal. Such zeal is evident
in his JCDC Popular Song entry Would
You Be My Lover, in which he signals
his intent to both be 'the man' and
to win the competition, hi addition
to showcasing his vocal talent, Be
My Lover is only one in a list of
songs that also points to the artiste's
creativity with the pen and his personal
experiences.
Currently a student
of Excelsior Community College, Akewa
is no stranger to performing for an
audience. He was a finalist in the
2006 Irie FM Big Break, proving the
pedigree of a vocal talent honed in
church. Akewa is also a Church Heathen,
as he is one of the choir members
in the video for Shaggy's latest anthem.
Multifaceted is as multifaceted does
and Akewa also lends his vocal, acting
and dancing talent to HOWZZAT?, the
latest installment of Pantomime. All
this as he seeks to establish a platform
from which to make a positive stamp
on the music industry. Based on the
positive energy which he brings to
Would You Be My Lover, Akewa's mission
will succeed.

KAVAJAH
Song: Stand Strong |

Voting Details |
Junior
Johnson o r ‘KAVAJAH’
has known all his life that he wants
to be a musician. He has accepted
in recent years that he must be a
performer. It is the combination of
these two realities that have brought
him to where he is today — poised
for great things.
From Cumberland,
Clarendon and the son of a high school
music teacher/church organist, Kavajah
has known and appreciated music all
his life. He gravitated naturally
to the keyboard and played in Sabbath
school as a youngster.
As he matured, his
disciplined approach to life and his
desire to find his true self, led
him to the Rastafari faith, which
he has embraced wholeheartedly. While
not a popular transition in the eyes
of many at the time, he has over time
garnered the respect, understanding
and support of those around him and
is a wonderful representation of the
order.
Since music was his
destiny he formed his first formal
band "Attack" in the mid
1990's, playing extensively throughout
Clarendon and Manchester. This led
to his introduction to a major producer
in the business who worked with him
on his first recording effort, "Trod
On". While not a chartbuster,
the song enlightened and encouraged
Kavajah to keep the faith and to continue
reaching for his goals hi the business.
He entered the popular
"Portmore Startime" competition,
gaining confidence, experience and
knowledge along the way. His style,
ambitions and willingness to work
hard garnered the attention of producers
from Gumption Productions, who recorded
his next single "Wake Up"
which he performed on TVJ. The association
with Gumption Productions has continued
and the company is working closely
with Kavajah to continue his growth
in the industry on all levels.
